Constipation? Show the red card to these food items!


Around 2-27% of the world’s population suffers from some degree of constipation. This disorder is characterized by hard stool or infrequent bowel movements. If you pass bowel fewer than thrice a week, you can be clinically diagnosed with constipation. There are many remedies for this annoying disorder, and the most important one among them is a diet rich in fibre. But at the same time, you should also pay attention to foods you should never eat when you’re constipated so that your countermeasures to constipation become even more effective.


The effect of caffeine on stool is complicated. If you are not going through a phase of constipation, too much of it will act as a stimulant and promote easy bowel movement, and may even cause diarrhea. But if you have chronic constipation, then it will dehydrate your stool further and make it harder to pass.


Glutens are proteins that you will find in wheat or barley. They do not trigger constipation in everyone. But if you have noticed an exacerbation of constipation after consuming glutens, you should talk to your doctor about it.

Milk and other dairy products

We usually consume cow’s milk and products made from it. But milk contains a type of protein that can make constipation worse. Children and toddlers who drink more milk than adults are more susceptible to this protein. That is why it is important to take children off their milk diet as soon as possible. Milk and milk products are foods you should never have when you’re constipated.

Red meat

Nothing good comes out of binging on red meat. It can destroy your health. And it is one of the foods you should never eat when you’re constipated because it hardly contains any fiber.

Fast foods

You have to steer clear of all convenience foods and greasy fast foods if you have constipation because all they contain are fats and no fibers. Moreover, these foods contain lots of salt. This forces your body to draw in water from the intestines to dilute the extra salt. This hardens the stool even more.


Alcohol is extremely dehydrating. It slows your digestion down and triggers bloating and constipation. That is why you should drink frugally. And when you do, make it a point to drink plenty of water in between the drinks as well as afterward.
